Become a Friend of Fort Frederick!
History of the Friends of Fort Frederick
In the fall of 1993, the state of Maryland cut back funding for all state parks. Many of the local parks in Washington County, including Gathland and Washington’s Monument, were closed. The staff and budget of Fort Frederick were reduced. Money was not available to purchase needed materials or to continue many of the park’s programs. Local Park Managers contacted interested citizens and history buffs in the area and sought their assistance in raising the funds needed to continue programs and reopen the parks. The various citizens’ groups became known as “Friends”. Through their efforts, Washington Monument and Gathland State Parks were reopened.
The Friends of Fort Frederick met for the first time as a result of this plea for help. The group, composed of local and out of state members, contributes substantial financial support directly to the Park each year, purchasing needed equipment such as chainsaws, tools, and snow blowers. They assisted with the refurbishing of the CCC Museum and have organized and participated in several archeological programs. In 1994, the Friends of Fort Frederick published their first book relating to Fort Frederick. In addition, the Friends sponsor many activities and programs throughout the year at the park.
The Friends of Fort Frederick is in constant need of members. Please help keep our heritage alive by joining us.
I wish to join the Friends of Fort Frederick!
